When bad things happen, make ourselves better, not bitter!

Do we believe that eveyrthing happens for the best in life?

Some people say 'yes'. And yet, some others say that it is not true.

What is our view?

Sometimes bad things happen that make us sad, upset and painful. So how can we say that everything happens for good? If God is so boundlessly loving, powerful and omniscient, how could evil exist in this world and how could bad things happen to our lives?

This is a very genuine human question. But a tough one to answer, isn't it?

When bad things happen we question God. We blame Him and become bitter.

But instead of asking "Why did this bad thing happen in my life", a better question to ask would be "What good did this bring?"

In fact if we are patient and intelligent enough, we can really come to know that everything happens for a purpose. But how?

When something doesn't happen the way we expect it to happen, but instead takes an exact opposite direction, instead of blaming God or others ask the following questions:
What good did this bring?
What did I learn from this?
How can I use this happening to make myself stronger and a better person?
How can I turn this into an advantage?
These questions are really powerful. They have the potential of changing our lives into a much better situation.

When unfortunate things happens don't perceive ourselves as a victim. Probably this may be the best and the most fortunate thing that ever happened to us.

When life gives us lemon, make lemonade. Yes. When bad things happen in life, try to get a miracle.

Why are they killing people in Catholic Philippines?

In just four months, about five thousand people - at leas 4.485 suspected drug users and dealers to be exact, according to the Philippine National Police -have been killed in this predominantly Catholic country.

The war against illegal drugs was President Rodrigo Duterte's main platform when he campaigned for election last year. Some 16 million voters, many of them Catholics hungry for social change, welcomed it.

Having received a huge mandate from the electorate, Duterte immediately started a "total war" against narcotics and imposed a deadline of three to six months to solve the country's drug menace. The rise in the number of killings seemed to have been prompted by the President's statement in July when he exhorted Filipinos to "go ahead and kill (drug addicts) yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful."

In August, the President said: "I'd like to be frank with you, are drug users - humans? What is your definition of a human being?"

The nearly 5.000 death toll is no cold statistic.Contrary to the sacredness of life, each case of extrajudicial killing signifies irreparable loss to the helpless victims' families, left behind with almost little or no possibilities for redress.

Upon clear orders from the Philippine head of state, without qualms, the perpetrators kill with complete impunity.

Senator Leila de Lima's extraordinary courage to investigate the killings proved almost futile. The goverment used all means at its disposal to twist information, silence witnesses, oust her as the head of a probe body, and worst of all, malign her dignity.

The Philippines is looked upon by the international community with eyes of condemnation for the systematic and gross violations of human rights these days.

United Nations Secretary - General Ban Ki - moon declared in a statement : "I unequivocally condemn Duterte's apparent endorsement of extrajudicial killings, which is illegal and a breach of fundamental rights and freedoms."

Other UN bodies have expressed concern about the rise in the killings of suspected drug users and dealers in the Philippines.

In retaliation, Duterte, the head of a country that is a UN founding member and a member of the 47 - seat Human Rights Council, responded: "Maybe we'll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations. If you are that rude, then we'll just leave you."

The Philippines will be subjected to the third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review in May 2017. Its human rights performance will be reviewed by its co member states.

The Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the U.N. in Geneva appealed to other states to understand why the Philippines needs to wage war on drugs. In a side event on drug - related killings, the Philippines said "there was no shoot -to-kill order, but pronouncements of the president proved otherwise."

More recently, the International Criminal Court, through its chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, said: "Let me be clear: Any person in the Philippines who incites or engages in acts of mass violence including by ordering, requesting, encouraging or contributing, in any other manner, to the commission of crimes ... is potentially liable to prosecution before the court."

More than 4.000 lives lost in four months! One life lost is one too many. Why the absence of a strong organized protest? Why the deafening silence of most in the Catholic Church? Why the reluctance of organizations, which used to condemn killings of the previous administration, to categorically condemn the present killings?

Human rights are universal. All victims have the same basic right to life. Yet, the defenseless poor are stripped of the inalienable right to life when bullets judge a person guilty before proven innocent. Silenced, forever, he or she leaves his wailing family in shock and griev - trapped in the perpetual cycle of poverty and social injustice.

The litany of cases of extrajudicial execution is confronting the government.

"Then there you are, sprawled and you are portrayed in a broadsheet like Mother Mary cradling the dead cadaver of Jesus Christ. These People, we'll be doing dramatics here." So said Duterte in his first State of the Nation Adress in July.

What has become of the predominantly Christian country in Asia?

Your Word is truth, O Lord, consecrate us in the truth - John 17 : 17

For the Israelites who felt that God has abondoned them; the prophet expresses God's Love as a love of a mother which never fails for her child at her breast or the son of her womb. Even if they forget, God will never forget his people.

We are reminded that as servants of God we ought to serve Him by our very life. We are called to bear witness to Him. Whether we have done it properly or not; is not for us to judge  but it is God who should judge us.

Jesus wants us to choose God as the sole master in our lives. As human beings we can do nothing compared to what God can do for us. Therefore we are called to place our trust and hope in God and in God alone.

God of Love. We are called to proclaim this to the world in word and in deed by our very life as his servants and stewards. We are called to give all prominence to God in our lives by refusing the evil one from our lives. The world and the evil one take God away from our lives. As God is all powerful and is caring we need not give into the world by thinking of life and body and the needs of them. God looks after the nature, His creation. How much more will he not do to man his greatest creation? He loves us more than a mother would love her child at the breast or son of her womb.

The Israelites who were discouraged as they did not feel God's love; Prophet Isaiah proclaims God's love as a love beyond the love of a mother towards her baby. This is quite clear in the saying of God through the prophet, "Does a woman forget her baby at the breast or fail to cherish the son of her womb. Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you."

We are called to examine our conscience so as to find out what we have done as his servants and stewards of the Lord. But we are not to judge ourselves for judgement is left for God. It is God who will judge us whether we were worthy of His trust.

As we are in the world we get carried away by the things and the offerings of the world. As we cannot do anything compared to what God is doing to the world and in the world. We should not give into the world but instead we should place all our trust and hope in the Lord. He is very clear when He says, "No one can be the slave of two masters. He will either hate the first and love the second or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and money."

Therefore let us not be worried about our life or body. The God who looks after the nature and all creatures in it will take care of us. By worrying we cannot add a single cubit to our span of life. Therefore let us not be worried about tomorrow or our life, body, food, drink or clothes. These are what are done by the pagans. As followers of Christ let us not give into worry but place our hearts on the kingdom of God and on His saving Justice. And all these other things will be ours.

The Apostle of Smiling

Just a little smile on your lips cheers your heart
Keeps you in good humour
Preserves peace in your soul
Promotes your health
Beautifies your face
Induces kindly thoughts
Inspires kindly deeds
Go out and radiate your smile
That smile has work to do - work to do for God

Smile on the lonely faces
Smile on the sorrowful faces
Smile on the timid faces
Smile on the sickly faces
Smile on the fresh young faces
Smile on the wrinkled old faces
Smile on ths familiar faces of your family and friends

Let all enjoy the beauty and inspiring cheer of your smiling face
Count, if you will, the number of smiles has drawn from others in one day
The number will represent the number of times you have promoted contentment, joy, satisfaction, encouragement or confidence in the heart of others
The influence of your smile is spreading though you do not always see the wonders it is working
Your smile can also bring new life, hope and courage into the hearts of the weary, the overburdened, the discouraged, the tempted and the despairing.

But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness - Matthew 6: 33

The whole Sermon on the Mount: the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness.

What does Jesus teach His disciples today? He exhorts them, that they 'should seek' (zeteite in Greek Text = imperative; hence a mandatory command and not a wish / request) how to live the values of the Kingdom and how to accomplish the saving plan of God ( = righteousness) - the top priority!

God, who knows they need their basic human needs like food and clothing, will see to them just as He feeds and clothes nature: "... and all these shall be added/given to you."

It is this mode of life that Jesus presents to His disciples to follow. This way of life is in total contrast to that of the secular world of little faith in which one worries so much as how to feed or cloth oneself and how to acquire mammon (=Wealth, property), being almost a slave of these human needs and mammon.

This imperative of Jesus (zeteite in Greek Text = Second person plural) is directed to all His disciples. Hence it has to be taken seriously by them as individuals and as a group, the Church. The crowds are also listening to these words and so, none can excuse oneself from this imperative of Jesus.

Today do we, individuals and the Church, prioritize the Kingdom and righteousness in our life, individual and ecclesial? Are our lives dominated by the values of the Kingdom? Do we strive to be righteous in the sight of God? Are we of little faith? Or are we of deep faith, placing our full confidence in the God who so assiduously cares for nature and who so maternally tended His people in exile remembering them constantly (Isaiah 49: writing their name upon the palms of His hands)? The more and more we live the Kingdom life of righteousness as individuals and as the Church, the more and more our material needs are met, as in the days of the Early Christianity (Acts 4: 34 "There was no needy person among them..."). God moves us to be magnanimous. Hence the Kingdom concerns our daily life, the Heaven is related to the earth.

Even today Christianity remains the major religion of the globe. Some continents, including the new one, Zealandia (with New Zealand and New Caledonia), continue to remain branded as Christian. Some countries are still considered Christian. True, the world, continents and countries are populated by baptized Christians. We should, definitely, be happy about it.

But we realize that this is only one side of the coin, as we analyze the real situation of these so-called Christian domains. Every year 'the extra' of food (like wheat, corn and milk) is dumped in the sea by governments, companies and farmers in order to inflate prices. This deprives the poor of free, subsidized or low priced food.

Cosmic Eucharist (3)

Transformation - The power to change the whole, communion and intimacy

Transformation and Eucharist

In essence, the Eucharist is a celebration of Transformation. It enables us to tune in to the transforming power of Jesus. It invites us to be part of the Jesus movement to bring about a universal reign of peace and justice for all, Jesus folded into his last meal with the women and men who were his disciples, his dream for the enhancement of life. He symbolized it by washing their feet. The transforming power of the Eucharist is released in the gratuitous service of the neighbour.

Interrelatedness - the power of care, how the Universe responds to the other

Interrelatedness and Eucharist

Interrelatedness is at the heart of Eucharist. The bread itself is the union of many grains - the fruit of the earth - the work of many human hands. Bread is the symbol of all that sustains us. It reminds us that we are of the Earth, that we belong here, that we are part of an Earth community. The breaking and sharing of the bread is a concrete expression of our membership of the community of life that has given us the bread. Bread is more than the work of human hands. It is a gift of the Earth itself.

Until recently, we were content to define that community of life as the human community. Without the assistance of the whole community of life there would be no bread and no wine to celebrate Eucharist. The grains of wheat carry in their genes the memory of all those life species that made the evolution of wheat possible. The wine is not only the fruit of the vine. In its genes are the forgotten contributions of a vast web of ancient ancestors. The fermentation of the grape Juice was made possibly by the activity of bacterial life. When we celebrate Eucharist, the whole web of life is participating in celebration.

Teilhard de Chardin identified the Cosmic Christ with the ultimate destiny of the Universe itself.

In the Mass of the World, Teilhard stresses the interrelatedness of all things. He understood the Eucharist to be a cosmic reality, one that incorporated the whole of the Universe. The Eucharist was for Teilhard the celebration of Cosmic Communion and an anticipation of the ultimate Omega Point.

"Do you therefore, speaking through my lips pronounce over this earthly travail your twofold efficacious word: the word without which all that our wisdom and our experience have built up must totter and crumble - the word through which all our most far reaching speculations and our encounter with the Universe are coming together in to unity. Over every living thing which is to spring up, to grow, to flower, to ripen during this day say again the words: "This is my Blood."

Radiance - the power of magnificence, how the Universe communicates

Invitations to the Banquet

Over the centuries, the understanding of Eucharist has been unduly spiritualized. We are programmed to think of it in terms of the heavenly banquet food for the soul, the bread of heaven. One of the 'Scandalous' innovations of Jesus was to invite to the table of celebration those who were excluded by the religious and cultural norms of the time. If the Cosmic Christ is representative of all of creation, then a celebration of the Cosmic Eucharist must be a place of hospitality for all. We need to work out the implications of this new understanding.

Reaching Out

The Eucharist as an object of private adoration does not capture the essence of what the historical Jesus was proclaiming. The Eucharist as the sacrament of Divine. Radiance needs to radiate beyond the quiet seclusion of a Church sanctuary. Divine radiance penetrates everywhere and everything.

What does it mean to say that the Eucharist is sacrament of Divine Radiance? It means that Eucharist impels us to reach out to all, and to be sensitive to Divine Radiance whereever it glows. The Eucharist invites us to become the living bread. We are the bread - we are the Body of Christ - we can reverberate with Divine Radiance. The Eucharist invites us to become Divine Radiance in our world, to allow Divine Presence to reverberate out from us.

War Begins in the Heart and Ends in the World

Envy, greed, and hate in the heart will breed war, violence and murder in the world.

War begins in the heart and finishes out in the world. The news we see in the papers or on television. Today so many people die and that seed of war, which breeds envy, jealousy and greed in my heart, is the same - grown up, become a tree - as the bomb which falls on a hospital, on a school and kills children.

Drawing from the story in Genesis of the Dove returning to Noah after the flood, God gave the rainbow and the dove to demonstrate His promise and desire for peace to reign in the world among every people. The signs also represent how fragile peace can be.

The dove is a sign of what God desired after the flood: Peace, that is, that all would live in peace. The dove and the rainbow are fragile. The rainbow is beautiful after a storm, but then a cloud comes and it disappears.

God's covenant is strong but our comitment to is weak.

The covenant which God makes is strong, but we accept it in weakness. God makes peace with us but it is not easy to care for peace. It is a daily task, because within each of us is that seed o original sin, that is, the spirit of Cain which - for envy, jealousy, greed and the desire to dominate - leads to war.

The responsibility of peace falls on every person; that we are our brothers' keeper, and when there is blood spilt, there is sin, and God will demand an accounting of the blood of our brothers and sisters who are suffering war.

In today's world there is blood being spilt. Today the world is at war. Many brothers and sisters are dying, even innocent people, because the great and powerful want a larger slice of the earth; they want a little more power, or they want to make a little more money on arms trafficking.

Every man is a delegate of peace and has an obligation to ensure less blood is spilled in the future, how war first festers in homes with families and friends.

How do I care for peace in my heart, in my interior, and in my family? Care for peace; not only care for it but make it with your hands every day. Just so will we succeed in spreading it throughout the whole world.

May the Lord give us the grace to say: "War is finished. War is finished in my heart; war is finished in my family; war is finished in my neighborhood; war is finished in my workplace; war is finished in the world". In this way shall the dove, rainbow and Covenant be strengthened.

Human Sexuality and Homosexuality

Human Sexuality and Homosexuality

Abortion and Homosexuality are Western vices. Our concern has been drawn to recent news reports that plans are afoot to legalise abortion as well as to recognise homosexuality. Do these machinations reflect our core values  or are we perchance falling prey to what Pope Francis refers to as 'ideological imperialism' of the West?

Ideological Colonization

Time and again, the Holy Father warns us about the dangers of ideological imperialism or domination. Some Western countries have legalized same sex marriage, example: recognizing homosexuality as a licit lifestyle. But this union can never be considered marriage. Sadly, they do not stop there. They export it to other countries, perhaps, coercively in exchange for some financial assistance or loans to respective governments.

The American scenario looks bleak. Matt Slick reports how homosexuality is promoted in movies, television, magazines, schools, etc. Social reengineering is well underway. Yes statistically, only 3% of the US population are homosexuals. Christians, on the other hand, occupy a far higher percentage, 70% yet they are not fairly represented in the media. Instead, Christians are routinely portrayed as bigots, narrow-minded idiots, hypocrites and worse. Why? Because, there is little tolerance and equality from the left for those who disagree with them.

The social attitude ofAmerica is slowly being engineered to accept liberal sexual behaviour while condemning and silencing those who disagree. Since behaviour follows belief, what is to stop our increasingly liberal society from acting on its silence-the-opposition attitude and become more and more harsh in its dealings with Christians? Nothing. In fact, there are increasing calls to get Christians kicked off of social networks for speaking out against homosexual marriage.

Truth about Human Sexuality

What is the meaning of human sexuality? What does it mean to be feminine or masculine? In, Familiaris Consortio, Pope John Paul II affirmed: "As an incarnate spirit, that is a soul which expresses itself in a body and a body informed by an immortal spirit, man is called to love in his unified totality. Love includes the human body, and the body is made a sharer in spiritual love" (n. 11). Human sexuality is geared towards love between complimentary sexes.

"God created man in his image; in the image of God he created him; male and female, he created them" (Gen 1: 27, 5: 1 - 2). According to the Scripture, therefore, the image of God manifests itself, at the outset, in the difference between the sexes. Humanity expresses itself in maleness and femaleness. Human sexuality is objectively based on the physical reality of the human body. It is not malleable nor pliable that could be transformed according to our fancy.

It could be said that human being exist only as masculine or feminine, since the reality of the human condition appears in the difference of the sexes. Hence, far from being an accidental or secondary aspect of personality, it is constitutive of person identity. Each of us possesses a way of being in the world, to see, to think, to feel, to engage in mutual exchange with other persons who are also defined by their sexual identity.

According to the Cathecism of the Catholic Church: "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul. It especially concerns affectivity, the capacity to love and to procreate and in a more general way the aptitude for forming bonds of communion with others" (CCC 2332).

The roles attributed to one or the other sex may vary across time and space, but the sexual identity of the person is not a cultural or social construction. It belongs to the spesific manner in which the image of God exists. Human sexuality determines the way the person acts, reacts and loves. It has an objective physical basis and not merely psychological.

Homosexual Tendencies

There are persons who suffer homosexual tendencies. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that homosexuality's "psychological genesis remains largely unexplained" (CCC 2357). But one thing is clear: it has no genetic basis. Nobody is born homosexual.

The American Psychiatric Association affirmed that there is a ample evidence that same-sex attraction has many different causes. These lead to significant childhood and adolescent emotional pain and psychological problems. Among males these could include a weak masculine identity, social isolation and loneliness, peer rejection or a poor body image and in females, a mistrust of male love or a weak feminine identity. No one can say "this is the cause" for same sex-attraction as though there were a single cause, but an individual can come to understand the origins of his or her own same-sex attractions through insight gained in therapy.

Men and women experiencing same-sex attraction may rightly feel that they "have always felt different", but that does not mean they were born that way. Children are born either male or female, but they have to learn what it means to be a man or a woman. They have to identify with - and be accepted by - their same-sex parents and peers.

If they are going to grow up psychologically healthy they have to feel safe and comfortable with their masculinity or femininity. If, for whatever reason, their fail to pass successfully through this essential development stage, they may in adolescence develop same-sex attractions.

There has been a massive campaign to hide this information from the general public and from those who sincerely wish to be free from same-sex attraction.

Church Teachings

Distinction must be made between those who have same sex attraction (SSA)and homosexuals. SSA is not immoral in itself and frequently their condition involves a difficult trial. While secular society has labeled such individuals as "gay" or "lesbian", the Church does not use these terms in official documents.

Although these words are common terms in current speech, they do not describe persons with the fullness and richness that the Church recognizes and respects in every man or woman. The human person can hardly be described by a reductionist reference to his or her sexual orientation. A person is bigger than his or her sexual orientation.

"The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition" (CCC 2358).

Having a certain tendency is one thing, given in to a unnatural tendency is quite another. Homosexuals, strictly speaking, are those who engage in homosexual acts, which are "intrinsically disordered," as the tradition of the Church has always declared. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith teaches that such acts "are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved" (Declaration Persona humana, 8; CCC 2357). This clear moral evaluation of acts must in no way prejudge those persons who have homosexual tendencies (SSA).

Furthermore, these persons "are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection" (CCC 2359).

Lawmakers' Moral Responsibility

Legislators have a grave moral obligation since laws have intrinsic educational force. Once a legislation has been passed and promulgated, it inevitably impacts on people's minds. Their reasoning leads them to think "what is legal is moral". This is not always true. Not everything legal is morally good. It would be so if it respects the authentic good of man. Moral goodness springs from the very nature of things and is deeper and prior to any positive law.

Thus, lawmakers must ensure they pass just and ethical laws. Legalizing an unnatural and sinful condition would deform people's consciences. In this regard, members of the parliament must be conscientious law makers since the responsibility of molding the minds of the citizens is in their hands. Let us pray so that they do not enact unethical legislations, such as laws authorizing abortion, homosexual unions, divorce, etc.

Overcoming Anger

A Zen student said to his teacher, "Master, I have an ungovernable temper. Help me get rid of it."

"You have something very strange," said the teacher.

"Show it to me."

"Right now I cannot show it to you."

"Why not?"

"It arises suddenly."

"Then it cannot be your own true nature," said the teacher, "if it were, you would be able to show it to me at any time. Why are you following something that is not yours to trouble your life?"

There after whenever the student felt his temper rising he remembered his teacher's words and checked his anger.

In time, he developed a calm and placid temperament.

Coping

"I do not know what to do. My husband is sick and my daughter wants me take her for classes," moaned Ira.

"Why are you worrying? I think we all worry especially about things we cannot control. I feel that we should start the day with a short prayer and leave everything in the hands of God. I have found that He gives me strength just for the day, enabling me to cope. You see to your sick husband and then let God take care of him. You ask your daughter if she can go alone for the class or to be patient till you can take her," advised Imran.

"That's not all. I have an attendant to look after my mother who is old and I worry since the attendant doesn't always come," said Ira.

"You cannot live for your mother. You can leave her in God's good care since you have to go for work. Or you could try working from home. I know that we all have problems with ageing parents and we also worry about our children," remarked Imran.

"I think most of us, especially Catholics, worry incessantly without letting go and letting God take over. Most mothers worry from the time the child is born and they pass on this worrying to their child. So all over the world, mothers and fathers worry especially about their offspring. I also know of persons who have a problem solved and then without being thankful, they start worrying about something else".

How to Reach Humanity

The Christian mission today means facing new challenges with simplicity, holiness and opennes to God.

Many still await knowledge of Jesus, the sole Redeemer of man and many situations of injustice and moral and material hardship challenge believers. Such an urgent mission requires conversion at personal and community levels. Only hearts that are fully open to the action of grace are able to interpret the signs of the times and to hear the calls of humanity in need of hope and peace.

Our apostolate is a vast field constituted by the urgent need to bear witness to the Gospel before everyone without distinctions.

It is true, we must go ahead towards the new needs, the new challenges, but remember we cannot go ahead without memory. It is a continual tension. If I want to go ahead without memory of the past, of the history of the founders, the great figures, and also the sins of the congregation, I cannot do so.

Our service to God's Word is witness to the Risen Christ, whom we have met on our journey and whom with our style of life, we are called to take wherever the Church sends us.

We are not princes, sons of princes or counts or barons: We are simple people, of the people. And for this reason we draw close with this simplicity to the simple people and those who suffer the most: the sick, children, the abandoned elderly, the poor... all of them. And this poverty is at the heart of the Gospel: it is the poverty of Jesus, not sosiological poverty, but that of Jesus.

God can draw great things out of smallness and unworthiness. Our smallness is in fact the seed, that then germinates, grows; the Lord waters it, and in this way it goes ahead. But the sense of smallness is that first impulse towards trust in the power of God. Go, go ahead on this road.

The Breath of Mercy

A mother should not have favorites, but I have often observed that she inclines more to the child who is sick or more vulnerable than the rest. The more fragile the child, the fiercer the love of the mother. The strong and healthy ones outgrow her solicitous nurturing, and she can do no more for them but accept their independence and love them cautiously, as if from afar. But the child who is paralyzed or autistic continues to need her care, and her aged maternal hands bestow upon him the same thousand attentions they did when they were young and supple.

Wassim

So it was with Wassim; he was the one who most required and awakened the maternity of the sisters and all who cared for him. Wassim was twelve years old when I met him. He was living in home for children, the appropriately named "Higar Nino Dios" (Home of the Child Jesus), run by sisters the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara. His mother entrusted him to the sisters' care when he was six, and though his doctors said he would die within the year, he had lived six years more. He used to sit in his custom-made wheelchair, as delicate and helpless as a tiny baby bird, all bone, completely immobile except for parts of his face. By day the sisters fed him and wheeled him around, by night they sang him to sleep in a crib with special padding. His head was normal size for his age, but it looked inordinately big compared to the rest of his gaunt body and contracted limbs. His eyes were the most prominent and expressive part of him, large and deep brown, so translucent that in my memory they seem to me the clearest blue.

Home of the Child Jesus

My first full day at the home was Chaotic; some sisters were absent due to a retreat and other activities, and I had to jump in with little preparation. I had come to help the sisters with this work of mercy for few weeks. I had been excited but a little uneasy before coming to the Home of the Child Jesus, since most of my apostolates for 1 year are in school, studying and teaching, not changing diapers and handling the sick. Though I was confident when it came to the Greek of the Illiad and comfortable amidst critical editions of Augustine, here among these little ones I felt inexperienced and awkward. How could I really help, how would I know what to do?

Just Normal
There was no time for theoretical approaches as a brother wheeled Wassim to me and asked me to bathe him. I looked at him doubtfully, and asked her "How?"She flashed an implish smile, and responded, "Just normal." I thought to myself that there was nothing normal about Wassim or the circumstance, but as I turned to voice this to the sister, she was gone and only Wassim was left blinking at me. I inhaled, turn on the water in the soft special bathub, and looked back at the child. He had not turned his gaze, and was simply waiting for me to begin. So after carefully removing his clothing as from a porcelain doll, I picked him up and placed him in two inches of warm water. The sight of him so exposed and helpless trapped my breath in my chest. I could count every one of his bones. I slowly began to rub his thin limbs with a mild soap, cautious of his sore spots and continually watching his face to make sure I was not hurting him. He moved his eyes back and forth upon my face with something like trust, and as the clean water rinsed and flowed over his little body I breathed out the tension. "Just normal," I thought.

The Best Apostle

I liked to watch the spontaneous and universal effect Wassim had on other volunteers who came to the home. Visitors immediately noticed him, since he was the most gravely ill and debilitated. The Arab children would vie to push his wheelchair, the jaded Italian reporter would kneel down to get at his eye level and speak softly to him, the elderly pilgrim would even dare to caress the top of his head ever so lightly. The very fragility of this child of God demanded, or rather, inspired, humanity to realize its own humanity. One sister told me proudly that Wassim was the best apostle in the Home, and that he was working many cases of conversion.

One morning near the end of my stay, I was doing laundry and cleaning in another part of the building. During my work, I rushed by the enclosed patio, the favorite spot of the children, glimpsed Wassim through the door, and stopped to say hello. His eyes looked duller and more vacant, there were slight creases on his brow and chin. The deep brown did not focus on me but flitted beyond my reach. Sister Superior noticed this too, said that there was something wrong, and called the doctor. "Well, he looks fine to me, and his vitals are completely regular, but if you want you are welcome to take him to the hospital. I know you sisters can sense things that we can't. It could be something related to his brain." I carried Wassim into the van and help him in my lap with pounding heart as Sister Superior drove to the children's hospital established by other sisters.

The head that lay on my left arm was the heaviest part of him, like a newborn babe, so I awkwardly curled my right hand around to give it extra support. As his frail body rested against my chest, I watched it delicately rise and fall to the ryhthm of my breathing. His complete dependence awed me. What if I put him in a wrong position or dropped him? His limbs could snap in an instant. I twisted myself further to give him a kiss on his brow, furrowed with signs of pain. When we arrived, I gingerly carried our child into the waiting room, amidst stares of sympathy and pity from the other parents. The mystery of such extreme fragility touched everyone. How could such a creature exist in such a world of bombs and tanks? Why did God entrust this child to us, to live among us and depend upon us? As I held him, his very life was in my breath.

To the abode of Angels

Within a week of my return, the news reached me that Wassim had left us. I was happy for him that he had gone from this valley of tears to the abode of angels, yet I felt an indefinable loss. With his look, he smote my heart. What other brown eyes could express at once humble trust and admission of complete fragility? It was his utter weakness that attracted me, not his strength. This weakness cried out for love and called forth a parent in me. It is the same weakness of a helpless Infant King in a gentle Virgin's arms, which was revealed to the world. It is the same weakness of the elevated white Host, thin and fragile, on our altars today. It is the heavenly Wisdom hidden from the wise and given to the simple, the logic of a God who becomes weak so that we might learn to be strong in love. And above all, it is the mercy of a God who sends a child to us so we might become his 'mother'. In the end, I was the one who depended on Wassim. It was my life that was in his breath.

My Friend

You gave me words of kindness
Tied with a ribbon of gold
Hearing them was important
To heal my heart and soul.

Your gift of words made a difference
When I was down and blue
Questioning why I bother
Doing what I do.

Life can be challenge
Sometimes it seems unfair
But when I was tired and struck
It helped that you were there.

What can I give you in return
Your friendship is so dear
Please know if you ever need
I will always be here.

Kind words and time are need
By people everywhere
When wrapped with smile
They're a gift that says I CARE

The Mesmerizing mystery of Mozart's Music - Mass in C Major KV 317

Mozart's tours and experiences in Mannheim and Paris prompted him to compose in a more international idiom to enlighten the audiences of Salzburg. He had been composing masses from 1768, when he was merely twelve years old. The Mass in C major, KV 317 composed in March 1779 is considered to be the "...finest Salzburg mass" (Stanley Sadie - New Grove). It was first performed on Easter Sunday April 4th 1779 at the Salzburg Cathedral. The original scoring was for four soloists, choir, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 timpani, violins, a bass violin and organ and it was in Missa Brevis (brief or short) form.

Why was it called the "Coronation" Mass? We have two possible explanations. It was "... traditionally believed to have been composed for the ceremonial crowning of an image of the Virgin"(The New Grove. Stanley Sadie) in the church of Maria PI3; in near Salzburg (Wikipedia). The second explanation is that this mass was used for all ceremonial occasions of the Imperial court of Austria, especially for the coronations of emperors.

The missa brevis (short mass) was used during the 15th - 16th centuries in short movements which included the Ordinary (fixed section) of the Latin mass. These would De the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Benedictus, and the Agnus Dei. Indeed, most composers by writing one or more of such masses. These sections relate to the traditional Roman Catholic mass which was primarily the ritual of the Eucharist. Music for masses has been in existence from the Middle Ages to the present day. Compositional styles have varied from monophonic (Plain Chant), polyphonic, homophonic to Jazz and Broadway style (Bernstein's Mass 1970-71). Pope John Paul II got Mozart's Mass in C major (Coronation) performed at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on June 29th 1985 with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra!

Kyrie
The congrgation's pleading for "mercy" is dramatically uttered in just five bars of chorus (tutti) in a forte syllable on "Ky" followed by piano syllables "ri-e". The solo voices of only the soprano and the tenor follow with a lyrical Kyrie e-leison and Christe e-leison answered majestically by the tutti with a rhythmic and dynamic vibrancy. This section is short and there is great dramatic contrast between chorus and soloists.

Gloria
Glorifying God, Mozart gives pride of place to the choir singing in a more homophonic style while the soloists are in a more contrapuntal style. The final Amen is extended through eighteen measures for the choir pairing off sopranos with tenors and altos with basses and in the last six measures the basses and tenors utter the Amen answered by the sopranos and altos.

Credo
This is the central focal point of the Mass and Mozart gives the choir representing the congregation, rich harmonic declarations of "I believe in one God" in an energic and brisk tempo. "The symphonic drive of the Credo is broken off for an Adagio Et Incarnatus, touching on distant keys with delicate violin arabesques..." (The New Grove. Stanley Sadie) amply describes the youthful Mozali's brilliant and meaningful scoring, fusing musicianship with ritual. At Et incarnatus est (was incarnate of the Virgin Mary) the tempo and key change and the soloists utter homophonically the Latin words solemnly and slowly. Traditionally, the ritual demands that the congregation kneels bowing their heads. This is answered by a sombre choir with the words Crucifixus etc. Mozart uses trombones to create a sinister atmosphere. Trombones were used even by Baroque composers like Monteverdi in his opera L'Orefeo to depict the underworld. At Et resurexit, the choir changes tempo to the brisk Allegro molto with which it began the Credo. The only other section for the soloists is Et in Spiritum... per Prohphetas. This section is structured in a complex contrapuntal form. The choir concludes the Credo with the final profession "... believe in one holy, Catholic..." which is also interestingly varied in its treatment of harmony and dynamics. Sixteen bars of an Amen where the Sopranos are imitated by the Altos and the Basses are imitated by the Tenors, follow with a final utterance of Credo and two more assertive Amens to conclude this magnificent, brilliantly scored section.

Sanctus
Traditionally the church ritual will utter the Sanctus and Benedictus as one prayer of the faithful. But Mozart makes them two separate musical entities. This section is entirely for the choir shouting "Holy" (Sanctus), at first, very majestically and, the later exuberant shouts of the Hosanna are taken at afaster tempo.

Benedictus
This begins with the soft solo voices very calmly. But soon the choir bursts forth with the loud Hosannas. Mozart repeats this pattern of contrasting the soloists and the choir.

Agnus Dei
There has been a lot of scholarly writing about thi section. The masterly scoring for a Soprano soloist to begin with, has led many to associate it with the aria Dove sona from Figaro. Indeed it is so exquisite that many advanced singers include this aria (Agnus Dei) in their vocal repertoires. A quartet follows with Dona nobis pacem in a contrapuntal form. The choir is allowed to come next with the spirited Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace) imitating the quartet but also extending tge musical motifs. Two singular utterances of Dona, Dona by the quartet is broken into by the choir's forte declaration of Dona nobis pacem four times to conclude this very expressive section. Mozart uses the same melodic phrases of the Soprano and Tenor solos in the Dona Nobis that he used in the opening of Kyrie's Soprano and Tenor solos, thereby achieving thematic unity - Kyrie (pleading mercy) and Dona nobis pacem (pleading peace).

Eczema

The term eczema derived from the Greek word for boiling which reflects that the skin can become so acutely inflamed that fluid weeps out or vesicles appear. It accounts to a large proportion of skin diseases. It is estimated that 10% of the people have some form of eczema at one time and up to 40% of the population will have an episode of eczema during their lifetime.

The common eczema is called Atopic Eczema. It is common in childhood. The exact cause is not well understood. Infections seem to be a triggering factor. Strong detergents, chemicals, even woolen clothing can exacerbate eczema. Teething is another factor in children. Severe anxiety and stress appears to exacerbate. Cat and dog fur certainly makes eczema worse. Food allergies may play a role. Dairy products may play a role in some infants.

The commonest presentation is of itchy red scaly patches especially in front of elbows, ankles, behind the knee and around the neck.In infants it often starts in the face. Very severe lesions may weep or be moist and can show as watery bubbles. Repeated scratching will thicken the skin. It may present as elevated patches or follicles.

Involvement of the nails may produce pitting abd ridging of the nails. The palms may show prominent skin creases. The broken skin often gets infected with bacteria. They appear as crusted lesions. Eye can get affected and present as a red eye and irritation. Retarded growth may be seen in children with the chronic disease.

The majority of children with early onset eczema will spontaneously improve and clear before the teeanage years. A few will get a recurrence as adults. However, if the onset is late in childhood or in adulthood the diseases follows a more chronic remitting/relapsing course.

Management includes avoiding of known irritants especially soaps or fury animals, wearing cotton clothes, and not getting too hot. Manipulating the diet (Example avoiding dairy products) is rarely beneficial except in a few children especially under 12 months of age. Any change in diet should be made under supervision especially with growing children who may need supplements like calcium. Local applications are sufficient to control eczema in most people. Medical guidance about detailed management should be carefully followed.

Psoriasis

It is a common disorder affecting 2% of the population. It is characterized by well demarcated red scaly plaques. The skin thickens about ten times the normal rate. It affects both males and females equally. Infections with streptococcal bacteria, drugs, example lithium, ultraviolet light, alcohol abuse, and possibly stress may be trigger factors to cause psoriasis.

The commonest variety is characterized by pinkish red scaly plaques with silver scales seen especially on the knees and elbows lower back, ears and the scalp. In older age the plaques are common in the groin, natal deft, under the breasts. A common variety seen in children is 'rain drop like psoriasis'. They are small oval or circular lesions appearing over the trunk. Nails can get affected in 50% of individuals where there will be pitting or separation of the nail plate or yelliwish brown pigmentation. 5 to 10 % individuals develop arthritis.

Urticaria/Angiooedima (hives, nettle rash)

This is a common skin condition characterized by development of itchy weals or swellings in the skin due to leaky skin blood vessels. These swellings are due to the action of chemical mediators including histamine which makes the skin blood vessels to leak fluid out into the skin. These conditions are viral or parasitic infections, drug reactions (Example Penicillins, NSAIDS), food allergy, example strawberries, food colourings, sea food, insect bites.

Urticaria produces skin swellings or weals developing over a few minutes. They can occur anywhere in the skin and last between minutes or hours before resolving spontaneously. They are extremely itchy and show no surface changes or scaling. They are normally red in colour but when very acutely swollen may be flesh coloured. It is treated with oral non sedating anti histamines.

Angio oedima affects the tissue deeper to the skin especially around the eyes, lips, and the hands but is rarely itchy this can be very alarming to the affected person. It can be dangerous if the mucus areas such as the mouth, breathing passage are involved but fortunately is very rare. This needs urgent treatment with adrenalin injection.

Acne Vulgaris (pimples)

It is a very common facial rash occuring in over 85% adolescents and infrequently continuing into early mid adult life. Occasionally it can cause psychological disturbance and depression, even suicide. The cause is multifactorial but follicular proliferation, blockage of sebaceous units with surrounding inflammation, increased sebum production are critical factors as is infection with a bacteria.

Acne presents in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as face, back and front of central chest. The three cardinal features are:
1. Open comedones (black heads)or closed comedones (whiteheads).
2.Inflammatory small swellings (papules).
3. Pustules small pus containing swellings.

The skin may be very greasy. Rupture of inflamed lesions lead to deep seated inflammation of the skin and cystic lesions which are more likely to cause facial scarring. A premenstrual exacerbation of acne is sometimes noticed. There is a tendency for spontaneous improvement over a number of years but can persist unabated into adult life.

Treatment is aimed at reduction of the production of sebum, decreasing infection, normalizing the inner thickening of the ducts, and decreasing inflammation. Regular washing with acne soap is helpful. Normal soaps are best avoided. Picking should be discouraged. There are local applications available. Low dose antibiotic for 3 to 4 months is often given. Retinoid drugs are available.

Blushing

Blushing is characterized by facial flushing in response to emotional stimuli and would be regarded as normal physiological response. In some individuals it is very frequent and can be a debilitating disorder interfering with work and social interaction. The cause may be psychological. Non emotional causes of flushing should be excluded example Post menopausal, drugs, alcohol, and diet. Treatment include cognitive behavioral theraphy, cosmetic camauflagand some drugs.

Rashes in new born babies

Strawberry naevus. Affects 1% of babies. Present at or shortly after birth, present as a single red lumpy nodule that grows rapidly for the first few months. Multiple number may be present. They will spontaneously resolve with good cosmesis but may take up to 7 years for complete resolution. Reassurance of parents is needed.

Milia

'Milk Spots'. Are small tiny cysts of pinhead size commonly found on the face of babies. They resolve spontaneously.

Mongolian Blue Spot

This appears in infants as deep blue-grey bruise like areas usually over lower back. It is very common in oriental children. It usually disappears by 7 years.

Nappy Rash

This is an infant eczema caused by occlusion of faecis and urine against the skin. It is almost universal in babies. The folds are spared. This is related to the ammonia in the urine. The last wash of the napkins with a tablespoon of vinegar added to the water is helpful to neutralize the ammonia.

Sacredness of Life and Genetic Racism

I am the Life

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life," Jesus declared in the Last Supper (Jn 14: 6). Being the Truth and the Life is something proper to the Son of God become man, who St. John says in the prologue of his Gospel is "full of grace and truth" (1:14). He is the Truth because by coming to this world he shows that God is faithful to his promises and because he teaches the truth about who God is and tells us that true worship must be "in spirit and truth" (Jn 4: 23).

Jesus is Life because from all eternity He has divine life with His Father and because He makes us, through grace, sharers in that divine life. This is why the Gospel says: "This is eternal life, that they know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent" (Jn 17:3).

In the Word "was life, and the life was the light of men" (Jn 1:4). The prologue goes on to expound two basic truths about the Word: that he is Life and that he is Light. The Life referred to here is divine life, the primary source of all life, natural and supernatural. And the Life is the light of men, for from God we receive the light of reason, the light of truth and the light of glory, which are a participation in God's mind.

Only a rational creature is capable of having knowledge of God in this world and of later contemplating him joyfully in heaven for all eternity. Also the Life (the Word) is the light of men because He brings them out of the darkness of sin and error. Later on Jesus will say: "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (Jn 8: 12).

Life belongs to God

God is Life. Out of sheer goodness he wanted to share his life to his creatures. Plants, animals and humans partake of this perfection of God. While plants simply live, animals live and have sensitive life, as well. Humans have been created at the peak of the material universe since he is bodily as well as spiritual. His spiritual soul is the principle of his life. For man, to be alive is to be human. To exist as a human person is to be a living being. Life and humanity converge into an interconvertible predication in man.

Thus, there is something sacred in man. Being a creature of God and a sharer of his infinite life, man's life is somewhat sacred. It is a gift of God to man. Life is not a right but a gift and a unique privilege.

It is only by God that human life is given; it is only by God that human life may be taken away. Every human soul is individually and personally created by God. God alone has the right to decide when that soul's time upon earth is finished.

The fact that human life belongs to God is so obvious that the gravity of the sin of murder. The unjust taking of another's life is recognized even through the light of reason by all men of good will. The sacred value of life is imprinted in the very nature of man. The Fifth Commandment of the Decalogue is not a precept that applies to one religion alone, just as the rest of the Ten Commandments. It is a precept of the Natural Law and therefore applies to all human beings insofar as they are humans.

It is never lawful to take the life of an innocent person. It would be gravely sinful and criminal to do so. Life belongs to God. He shares it with us but we cannot dispose of it as we please.

But what if the fetus has deformities or abnormalities? Is it justified to resort to abortion?

Pre-natal diagnosis

With the advent of pre-natal diagnosis, pregnant mothers go through it to have an idea of how the baby would be. What if those expectant women underwent pre-natal tests and receive  what is called "poor pre-natal diagnosis," or PPD. This means that their infant is afflicted with a chromosomal abnormality or a serious defect in a vital organ.

With the increase in genetic testing and fertility treatments some couples are facing these difficult decisions. Parents suffer pressures from doctors, therapists, friends and family to terminate the pregnancy. They are given the grim prospect of a child born prematurely who will die shortly after birth or suffer severe deformities and a brief life filled with suffering and pain.

From the medical point of view, Dr. Michael Monge wrote, induced abortion due to pathological conditions of the fetus may at a glance, seem most reasonable in cases of fetal abnormality, diagnosed intrauterine, with certainty, using modern technology, example biopsy of the chorionic villi, amniocentesis or ultrasonography (Ethical Practices in Health and Decease).

Genetic racism

This dilemma creates a greater impact today compared to the past when accurate diagnostic methods were lacking. The parent's reaction is ubderstandable in the face of a possibly abnormal offspring, diagnosed with certainty, near certainty or high statistical probability. The suppression of a new life because it is defective is not the proper course of action. From the medical point of view, one could resort to a good prophylaxis, pre-natal or intrauterine theraphy, where feasible, and in extreme cases, rehabilitation. One can never directly induce the death of an innocent being.

In a similar way, the outright rejection of the handicapped person supposes a kind of racism of the healthy, or chromosomic racism. This attitude could bring grave consequences for humanity. We recall how Hitler, prior to extermination of the six million Jews, had been previously convinced that they were inferior human beings. For him, those belonging to inferior racea do not have a right to live. Sounds like a simple idea but resulted to an unprecedented massacre of innocent people.

Moral criteria

Christian doctrine casts new light on these dramatic cases. The Spanish Episcopal Conference teaches that "the case is also difficult when one confronts the risk of giving birth to a baby with grave congenital anomalies. We cannot minimize the tragedy of the situation".

"But one cannot claim for himself, even during these dramatic circumstances, the right to suppress human life, no matter how defective the child might be. Life is valued neither for its normality nor future productivity but for its intrinsic dignity. It has been repeatedly affirmed that the presence of these unique beings in the midst of a dehumanized and utilitarian society can and should help in basing mutual relations upon due respect for all human beings, which is more important than what they give or produce.

"The competent authorities must create specialized educational institutions for the education of these type of individuals, whose needs exceeds the capabilities of their own families".

"We must remember that during these circumstances, as in many others during the course of our life, we will find ourselves face to face with the mystery of suffering and evil, what is the mystery of the Cross of Christ, which according to our firm hope leads to the splendor of the Resurrection. The Christian attitude should be to take up the cross of each day, led by the hand of the heavenly Father" (Spanish Episcopal Conference, Note No. 17, October 4, 1974).

Genetic or chromosomic racism is an error of functionalism which judges the right to live according to the quality of life or usefulness of the human being. If we fall into this error then we will have to concede as well to the killing of deformed kids, adolescents, adults or grandparents, regardless of the cause of their abnormality whether natural or otherwise. Should we?

The Lourdes Apparitions

In the 1850's the little village of Lourdes in Southern France was a modest market village with nothing much to distinguish itself except in appalling poverty and sprawling unemployment. Bernadette Subirous was one among the numerous impoverished children of the locality with the additional trauma of chronic asthma from which she never recovered until her death. Then the improbable happened. In 1858 the Blessed Virgin deigned to choose this little girl of Lourdes as her instrument to reveal to the world the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. On February 11 she appeared to Bernadette as a damsel of unimaginable beauty at a grotto-cave beneath the rocky cliff of Massibielle bordering Lourdes. Mary was dressed in pure white with a blue sash. Her head was covered with a white veil while her hand held a glittering Rosary with a shinning crucifix. As the terrified visionary made the sign of the cross, clutched her Rosary and began to pray, the Blessed Virgin herself fingered the Rosary in silence, while the Aves were repeate and joined only in the recitation of the "Our Father" and the "Glory be". It was a totally silent vision as no words were exchanged.

Subsequently, though there were 18 apparitions in all, this smiling visitor from heaven spoke only on a few occasions. During the third apparition, Bernadette was asked by the Lady to visit this site for 15 days which Bernadette cheerfully accepted, without a second thought. Later, during the 9th apparition, this mysterious Lady directed the visionary to dig the dry soil with her bare fingers and drink the muddy water that trick led out. Bernadette readily obliged and within a matter of a few hours this turned out to be the Healing Spring of Lourdes.

The 13th apparition had a message for the clergy. "Go and tell the priests that the people should come here in procession and that a chapel be built here." Abbe Peyramale, the Pastor of Lourdes was baffled. However, he directed Bernadette to request this celestial visitor to reveal her identity. Despite Bernadette's repeated appeals, the smiling Lady remained conspicously silent. Then came the long awaited response during the 16th apparition on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation. Joining her hands in prayer and her eyes lifted up to heaven, the heavenly Lady spoke out "I am the Immaculate Conception," which many years later prompted William Wordsworth to write of Mary as 'Tainted Nature's Solitary Boast'.

The miraculous healing of Louise Bourtietto from an incurable blindness, of Jeanne Crassus from total paralysis and of the two year old prince, imperial Son of Emperor Napoleon III from a dangerous sun-stroke, all in quick succession brought credibility to the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes. Today, after more than 15 years miracles continue to flow from the healing Spring of Lourdes. Besides, Bernadette's incorrupt body, now exposed for public veneration at Nevers, near Paris serves as an additional proof of the authenticity of the Lourdes apparitions.

The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception had been debated for centuries by Church theologians. This was further strengthened by the apparition of Our lady to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830 at Rue de Bac with the inscription: "Oh Mary conceived without original sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." Then came the dogma of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1854 promulgated by Pope Pius 1. Hence, the Lourdes apparitions have been regarded by the Church as 'Heaven's Approval' of the Dogma proclaimed in 1854.

The Medical Bureau at Lourdes is comprised over 100 qualified Medical Specialists of all creeds  and races, all of whom need to attest the numerous healings taking place in Lourdes. This more than justifies Our Lady's continuing presence at Lourdes.

"Penance-Penance-Penance - pray for the conversion of sinners," Our Lady's last message during the 18th Apparition on February 24, 1858 at Lourdes.

Modern Day Pharisees and Scribes

"I tell you unless your rightness surpasses that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven". (Matthew 5 : 20).

'Pharisee' is from the Greek word pharisaios taken from the Heb/Aramaic perisha, meaning "Separated one."

Letter of the Law

In the time of Jesus the Pharisees were one of the three chief Jewish sects, the others were the Sadducees and the Essenes. Of the three, the Pharisees were the most separated from the foreign influences that were invading Judaism and from the conduct of the common Jewish people in the land. Their main aim was to preserve their national integrity and strict conformity to Mosaic Law. The Pharisees later developed into self-righteous and hypocritical formalists. One of their major characteristics is the value they placed on oral traditions. 'Oral Law' refers to traditional rules and observances that were designed to adapt the written Law to changes of time. They gave priority to the Law, rather than Love for their neighbour.

The Scribes were learned teachers and authoritative leaders. Most of the time the Scribes earned their living by copying and interpreting the Law. In the New Testament the Scribes are mentioned as "teachers" of the Law, the rabbis and the official leaders of the people, along with the Pharisees and the Gospels, reffered to them as "doctors of the Law."

The Pharisees and Scribes obeyed the traditions of their fathers. Jesus Christ always criticised them for obeying these traditions of elders which nullified the Word of God. Therefore most often the Pharisees and Scribes were the opponent of Christ. For them the Law was more important than the Love of God. Even though the Word of God was among them, they did not want to open their hearts to the Word because their hearts were filled with hate, pride and avarice. They hated Jesus as He and His disciples did not pay heed to their traditions.

Mark 7: 1 - 23 describes an example of Jesus and His followers not observing traditional rules in relation to the Sabbath and cleanness. In Matthew 23, where Jesus pronounces His woes upon the Scribes and Pharisees, He repeates His prophetic curse upon them, "Woe to you" eight times because of their arrogance, hypocrisy, self-seeking ambition and scrupulous observances. Don't we see the same mentality even today among some of the members in the Religious Life and generally in the Holy Church?

Love of the Father

Yes, there are those of us who have the same arrogance, hypocrisy, self-seeking ambition and scrupulous observances which Pharisees and Scribes had. The Church means all of us - the Laity and the Priests and Religious - who make up the Mystical Body of Christ.

Jesus Christ did not want to abolish the Law; He came to fulfill it by showing the importance of the love of God. He wanted to show that Love is more important than anything on earth. However, the Pharisees and Scribes did not look at things from the human perspective. Hence, they did not understand Christ and were bent on imposing on the people, man made rigid and ridiculous traditions. These Pharisees and Scribes did not understand that they were also like slaves to the traditions set by their elders.

Likewise even today there are many of us who have the same mentality of these Pharisees and Scribes whom we read about in the Bible. Even though Pope Francis gives priority to Mercy and Love, some are not ready to open their hearts towards the Mercy and Love of God. Irronically, the resistance the Pope gets is not from outside the Church, but from within the Church. This is because we as a Church are also slaves to our own taditions. This happens because most of us are HEAD CENTRED and NOT HEART CENTRED as the Word of God wants us to be.

Some of us are more concerned about rituals rather than worshipping God from our hearts. There are lay people who are just waiting to pin point errors of the clergy and even a small inaccuracy of the priest while celebrating Holy Mass is something to be enlarged upon and spoken about. Some of us are so worried about these rituals that we fail to recognize the meaning of the Holy Mass celebrated up there in the altar of the Lord. Some misinterpret the teachings of the Church. Some pretend they are good Christians, but their hearts are filled with avarice, hate and jealousy.

Acts of Mercy

Come Lent and we as a Church are at our best, just waiting to show to the world what good Christian we are. We never fail to perform all the Corporal and Spiritual Acts of Mercy that is required of us during this time. But do we do it from our hearts out of concern for the suffering or from our head centred attitude to accomplish something and be happy about it? Most of us are like that. We perform such deeds without any empathy year after year and forget about it after Lent as we go about our day to day life. Mercy should be a part of our life as we journey through it. That is exactly what Pope Francis says. We do not need a time frame set by the Church calender to do that. The seasons of Lent and Advent are a reminder for us to stay focused in our Christian duty of loving our neighbour as ourselves, as Christ rightly pointed to us.

The Holy Church of Jesus Christ was established to spread love and mercy. Pope Francis always reminds us about the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. But many shepherds and sheep are not opening their hearts to the Love  of the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd wants all of us to be faithful to Him. He pours out His love to all. He invites us to change our lives and to follow Him always. Even though there are so many members of the Church who have the same mentality of the Pharisees and Scribes, there are also others who follow the footsteps of the Lord. Their is humility in their lives. But the weak, abondoned, marginalized, persecuted, are those with hearts of Mercy and Love. In the Bible they are the ones who recognise the Lord. They experience the taste of God's Love.

Therefore, let us ask ourselves, "Am I a modern day Pharisees or a Scribe?" If so, it is the time to change our lives, especially now, with the Season of Lent. We should change our attitudes and fill our hearts with humility. Unless we do so, we will not be able to experience the taste of God's Love. If anyone says he/she is a member of the Holy Church, humility should be prominent in his/her life. If not, he/she is not a Christian!

"Humility is a childlike virtue and this is true humility and not a rather theatrical humility: No, not that: The humility of somebody who said: "I am humble, but proud of being so." No, that is not true humility . The humility of the childlike is that of somebody who walks in the presence of the Lord, does not speak badly about others, looks only at serving and feels that he or she is the smallest... That is where their strength lies." - Pope Francis
